Retail market comments

'Hard and soft discount stores have been the dominant store format in Spain for the past five years. Carrefour is the key discount store operator, followed by Lidl and Aldi.'

'German retailer Tengelmann also played a key role in the discount sector over the period. However the group exited the market in July 2007, divesting its stores to Dia, a division of Carrefour.'

'Supermarkets are also a strong format, numbers of which have been growing steadily.'
